Ten years ago today I started Heather Ryan Photography! It is hard to believe that I have been running a business for a decade, but then again time flies when you're having fun!!
My love of photography started very young and I had my first point and shoot 110 film camera in elementary school. I have always loved photography and I was always that friend taking photos and documenting every moment :) In spring of 2009 I had just purchased my first DSLR and kit lens. I was in my early twenties and working full-time in DC as a legal assistant when one of my co-workers asked me to take engagement photos of her and her then fiance. We met on a weekend at Brookside Gardens and their love was so beautiful and inspiring. Our photo shoot was so. much. FUN!
During that first shoot I knew what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. My love of photography was perfectly paired with my love of people. I had honestly never considered photography as a career path before, and I knew it would take years before I would be able to leave the security of a full-time job and venture out on my own. It would take a full eight years of working two jobs, establishing myself in the industry, learning how to run a business, mentoring with photographers in the area, investing in quality equipment, saving for a financial safety net, and also building a wonderful client base. In April of 2017 I took the leap to full-time and haven't looked back once.
Ten years ago, running a full-time photography business was just a pipe dream and I am so thankful that it is now my reality. I am beyond grateful to be welcomed into my client's lives and entrusted with their memories. It is an awesome responsibility, and not something that I take lightly.
So thank you. THANK YOU!! Thank you to my clients for your trust and business, and thank you to my family and friends for your love and support. And here's to working for and chasing your dreams!
Much love, H

Happy May friends! In honor of the start of this fabulous month, I am sharing one of my favorite engagement sessions from last year.
Everyone, meet Victoria and Mark!! These two loves are getting married in just a couple weeks! We met for their engagement session on a lovely May morning just before sunrise at the Georgetown waterfront, and following a quick outfit change we headed up to the canal. I know sunrise is early, but I can't stress it to my couples enough - it is worth it! We had the entire waterfront to ourselves, the light was perfect, and by the time we wrapped up our shoot the humidity of the day was just setting in and the streets were crowded. Over the course of my photography career sunrise has quickly become my favorite time of day!
Both Victoria and Mark are fellow native Marylanders, and Victoria is a fellow Salisbury Alum. They have been together for almost five years now and excited to be married! I loved getting to know them during their engagement session and can't wait to meet their family and friends as they become husband and wife.
Victoria and Mark -- Happy Wedding Month!! I can't wait to see you two soon!! xo, H

I met up with Quinn and Anthony at the Lincoln Memorial for their engagement session back in September. We met up just after sunrise to beat the heat of the day and scored a gorgeous sunny morning, perfect for photos! These two met and fell in love in DC, so they knew an iconic DC backdrop would be perfect. They're getting married in Rhode Island and it was such a joy to work with them during this exciting time!!
